Miro Design System
As a Senior Product Designer specializing in Design Systems and Software design and development at Miro, I lead governance and support a contribution model for product teams to ensure that accessibility is integrated into everything we build.
One of my most challenging projects was setting up the Design System at Miro as the first Design System designer, collaborating with over 300 people across 16 teams. The most difficult aspect was gaining trust and formalizing design decisions across such a large, distributed team, ensuring our system supported product designers and developers in their daily work.
To address this complexity, I focused on fostering shared ownership by building a clear contributions model and nominating champions within teams. This approach helped us ship over 30 components with 1,000 instances to the product in the first three months. These components significantly impacted Miro’s 60 million users, bringing accessibility features, improving inclusive design, and resolving 38% of cross-platform accessibility issues.
Through this collaborative effort, we reduced auditing costs and improved satisfaction metrics across the board. The success of this project not only accelerated the adoption of the design system but also laid a strong foundation for ongoing collaboration between design and development teams, which had a lasting impact on the company’s growth.
